Thelonious Dee
Spawned from his own creation, the calm cool intellectual Thelonious Dee emerges on the hip-hop scene with a unique blend of mind bending beats and thought provoking lyrics. This produce/emcee is reminiscent to an era when hip-hop flourished with individualism and vibrancy. His sound is a skillful mix of organic blends morphed by soulful samples and hard banging drums/percussion. Although heavily influenced by music his whole entire life, Thelonious Dee’s interest in producing wouldn’t come until later. Beginning his production quest in 2004, Thelonious has transformed a passion into an all out love affair with music. “Lyrically I was always influence by emcees and groups like: Rakim, Mos Def, J-Live, Pharaoh Monch, Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and Wu-Tang Clan,” Says Thelonious “As for producers I always liked, DJ Premier, Showbiz, Pete Rock, J-Dilla, Mad Lib, and Just Blaze.” Despite the obvious fact that Thelonious is deeply influenced by hip-hop, few would know his deep connection with Jazz music. His affinity for Jazz, would earn him the title of Thelonious as of the late great pianist Thelonious Sphere Monk. Much like Thelonious Monks unconventional style, Thelonious Dee brings a balance to his chaos. “Jazz to me is chaotic in its self, it’s the only form of music that possesses true expression” Says Thelonious “Hip-hop took that very same concept of freedom and applied it to the original four elements of the hip-hop culture which always kept me intrigued with hip-hop.” In fall of 2005, Thelonious would produce and co-write his first LP entitled “The Waiting Period” with his Los Angeles based hip-hop group D.K.L.A. In the summer of 2007 “The Waiting Period” was release, receiving praise from commercial and college radio stations across the globe as well as a few blogs and magazines. In 2009 D.K.L.A. would catch the attention of Music Connection Magazine for their work on “The Waiting Period” crowning them one of Music Connection’s top 25 music critiques for 2009. In the spring of 2008 Thelonious would yet set his scope on a new project, collaborating with the artist officially known as Skeet for an uncommon twist of sci-fi and southern bass to create Skeet’s debut solo album “Since 1984”. Also during the course of 2008, Thelonious would work with prolific emcee Prophit PAN on his mind altering ensemble “Psycho Acoustic” due to be released in 2011. At the top of 2010 Thelonious would gear up for a new journey, with the importance of building a brand name within the music industry, Thelonious has sought to conquer that very task. It is no hidden secrete that Hip-Hop music has taken rapid declines in record sales since its golden era of hip-hop during the mid to late 90’s. Some would argue that this decline was brought about by internet piracy while other would argue that it was a decline in the quality of music. At any rate hip-hop’s decline has been substantial enough to bring about new blood and a resurgence of hip-hop legends with producers like J-Dilla, Black Milk, and 9th wonder and emcees like Rakim, Grand Puba, and Reakwon. This window of opportunity is the very reason why Thelonious Dee has set a course to make his mark in the world of hip-hop music. His hard work and dedication to music is the source to his motivation, his approach to music is unique in the fact that he strives for originality within his music. “My creativity is my birth right,” Says Thelonious “It is the only thing I possess that I fully control, while some have art and literature, I have music.” Although Thelonious Dee’s focus is becoming a household name in hip-hop, you can’t deny the feeling that his potential is much more than this honorable positions. Thelonious Dee possess a quality that is rare in this day and age, his hard work ethic combined with his honest nature is a testament to all men, that passion mixed with integrity is the lethal concoction for success. His music speaks volumes, like a raw untapped source of energy, every song and track embodies his essence filling you up with that feel good feeling that made you fall in love with hip-hop music from the jump. “I make music for the love of making music and each song or track is filled with that same passion,” says Thelonious “Music is my life, and as long as I have music in my life, I’m good.” There is plenty in store for Thelonious Dee’s future; his infectious talent brings forth an overwhelming sensation of anticipation for what’s to come as we can only wait for Thelonious Dee’s legacy to arrive.
